Goldic injections

To treat

Pain due to cartilage damage or arthritis (both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis). Can also be used to help healing after meniscus repair and articular cartilage regeneration procedures and to cure longstanding tendon pain (tendinopathy) when other measures have failed to help.

This procedure can be considered as a natural scientific progression to platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection treatment. The healing potential of the clients own blood is used to produce a pain relieving and regenerative effect. Gold has also long been known for its anti-inflammatory effects and has been used in the past for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In the GOLDIC (gold particle induced cytokines) procedure first a blood sample is taken under sterile conditions. This blood is then incubated with fine gold particles that stimulate certain blood cells (monocytes) to release vital growth factors and other substances (cytokines) into the serum producing a specially conditioned serum. The sample is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the different parts of the blood removing the gold particles, platelets and cells. The Goldic serum is then prepared for injection.
Most patients notice an improvement in their pain starting about 2-3 weeks after the injection. Some notice pain relief a bit earlier. After a course of injections the improvement can last for up to 4 years or longer in some. Depending on the initial problem, a course of injections can result in complete resolution of the problem.
Although relatively new in the UK, Goldic injection procedures are being performed worldwide. As with PRP, it is very safe.

Complications are rare. Standard risks apply. Infection. Mild soreness after the injection.

No special preparation is needed.

Appointment Duration

30-40 minutes for the first consultation. 20-30 minutes for subsequent injections.

Recommended Number

Goldic treatment involves a course of 4 injections over a period of 4 weeks. Blood is only taken once at the first consulation to prepare the Goldic PRP for all 4 subsequent injections.

A showerproof dressing is applied. This should be left in place for 24 hours. Normal activity is allowed after the injection without restriction.

A study published in 2021 confirmed that Goldic treatment provided sustained improvement in pain from arthritis at 4 year follow-up. 64 patients were studied and of this group only 9 failed to respond and went on to have  knee replacement surgery  (Schneider et al Int Orthopaedics 2021)

A study published in 2022 showed that the pro-infammatory cytokines IL-9 and TNF-α were signifcantly downregulated in patient serum after Goldic treatment. This indicates the possible mechanism leading to reduced joint pain and damage.  (Feldt et al Nature Scientific reports 2022)
